I really dislike getting invested in TV shows. It’s a time commitment every week that I don’t want to make. I watched a season or two of Glee and then dropped it sadly, and I watched The Secret Life of the American Teenager for a couple of seasons too, and then it got ridiculously stupid (yes, it was stupid from the beginning, but engaging IMO). The only reason I ever saw all of Sex and the City was because my college roommate owned the box set and I had some free time during the winter break of my senior year of college (so, four years after the series ended).

But I might just have to lift my ban on weekly television engagement for the new NBC show Smash, written by veteran playwright Theresa Rebeck. I watched the pilot episode via iTunes last week and it was really entertaining. Katherine McPhee is a talented women to be sure, and I can’t help but loving all of the theatre names on the show (Megan Hilty, Christian Borle, Brian d’Arcy James, and eventually Will Chase will be on too) – names that I’ve watched onstage for years and I’m so excited to finally see them on network TV.  They’ve paid their dues, for sure.

The plot centers around the casting for a new Marilyn Monroe bio musical. They’re down to two actresses – Broadway veteran Ivy Lynn and the totally green Karen Cartwright. I’m not sure how they’re going to drag out the audition process to 20-something episodes but I’m excited there’s finally a show on for my people (theatre nerds).

Tune in tonight at 10pm on NBC for the first episode.
