Last night, Kristen and I went to see Eve Ensler’s Emotional Creature at Signature Theatre. We had drinks beforehand because we knew it’d be an estrogen overload and probably, at times, make us want to vomit. We’d both read and studied The Vagina Monologues in college, so we had an idea of what we were getting ourselves into.

Some of the stories were quite powerful, but the way they were interspersed with incredibly cheesy musical and dance numbers made it a close contender for “most awkward time spent in a theatre.” The musical numbers made it feel like an after-school special. They were totally unnecessary.

The company was comprised of six very, very talented actresses: Ashley Bryant, Emily S. Grosland, Sade Namei, Olivia Oguma, Courtney Thomas, and Molly Carden. They will all go on to do amazing things (hopefully!).

Because of some of the powerful monologues, it wasn’t as torturous as I thought it might be. But please, someone cut those musical numbers in the next staging.
